Yes I imagine that applications will increase the amount of data I use but again only when I don't have wifi. O2 are great in the uk because you get access to the cloud wifi zones for free and they have partnerships with BTOpenZone and a heap of others so your iPhone gets wifi all over the place.

Apple's app connection will probably switch since wifi is so much more reliable. The persistent connection they keep won't be a single persistent connection just a connection that's open whenever pissble so when you change networks it switches. Otherwise it couldn't handle wifi but no phone reception or ibternational roaming etc.

hehe.

Considering I also have wifi at home and at work, I was actually considering a $39 500mb plan - adds $100 to the overall phone cost, but better matches my call usage and drops the TCO to $1220.

I couldn't find any decent indicators of how much data you really use on the phone, so thanks for that. I can see myself easily using more than 50mb once I have a few apps installed, I somehow doubt their app connection from the apple servers will switch to wifi. Still, 500mb is a lot considering how little I'm generally out of wifi range.

In fact the more I think about it, $51 a month total sounds like a great idea. If I ever start going over quota regularly, I'm sure Optus would love me to upgrade to the higher cost plan with 700mb ;)

Sach le blur! 700mb! (why yes, I am waiting for my flight home from Paris... they have iMacs in the business lounge...) If you can use more than 700mb of data on an *iPhone*, you need a life. My grand total iPhone data usage last month was 50Mb. You have 650Mb to go.

The only way you're going to use serious amounts of data on an iPhone is if you spend your life on the train and don't have a wifi network at work or home (thus you use edge/3G everywhere). I have wifi nearly everywhere I go (including half the train ride) and thus hardly touch the edge network.
